His principal fields of research are the older history of Slovak music, especially the baroque period, the question of secular and religious composition in Slovakia and Europe in the Baroque, and the older and more recent epochs of musical history.
As leader of research projects he focuses on research of the culture of the 17th and 18th centuries in Slovakia, especially the culture of religious orders (Franciscans, Jesuits, Piarists) from an interdisciplinary standpoint (musical, linguistic, literary).
He has published numerous studies at home and abroad (Hungary, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland. He has produced monographs on Slovak musicians, mainly of the 18th century (František Xaver Budinský, Jozef Pantaleon Roškovský, Gaudentius Dettelbach, Juraj Zrunek, Peter Peťko and others), and he is the author of entries in the MGG encyclopaedia. Alongside his principal activity as a researcher, he has also written much in the area of scholarly popularisation. He is the editor of a number of CD titles which aim to give new life to unknown musical sources in the archives. He has been the organiser of several scholarly international conferences and has edited collections.
He is a member of the presidium of the Johann-Joseph-Fux-Gesellschaft based in Graz and a member of the Internationale Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Hymnologie. Currently he is president of the Slovak Musicological Association.
