In the field of research he has focused on the history and theory of the aesthetics of opera, musical theatre, Czech opera and Slovak opera.
He has been a member of the following scholarly organisations: Slovak Musical Union, Slovak Musicological Association, International Johan Strauss Society, International Leoš Janáček Society, Slovak Teatrological Society, International Association of Theatre Critics (AICT), Czech Society for Musicology.
He has engaged in publicistic activity, working as editor of the journal Hudobný život (1985-1986), and as editor (1988-1996) and from 1991 principal secretary of the journal Literárny týždenník.
He has worked as an external pedagogue at the Department of Musical Theory at the Musical and Dance Faculty of VŠMU (1986-1991, 1999-2003) and at the Department of Musicology at the UK Philosophical Faculty in Bratislava (1987-1989, 1997), where he taught the aesthetics of music, and the Bratislava Conservatory (1997-2006).
