Born in Banská Bystrica, he studied piano at the Conservatory in Bratislava in the class of Sylvia Macudzińska, and later studied Musicology at Comenius University. After graduating, he worked at the Conservatory in Košice as a teacher of music and theoretical subjects. In the 1962/1963 season, he worked as a dramaturg in the Jozef Gregor Tajovský Theater in Banská Bystrica. In the years 1963 - 1971 he was the editor of the magazine Slovenská hudba, he joined the Institute of Musicology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, where he became the editor of the scholarly journal Musicologica Slovaca.

Vajda has created many important opera critiques of productions of the State Theater in Košice, Banská Bystrica, and Bratislava. He has published in magazines such as Hudobný život, Hudební rozhledy, Slovenská hudba but also in theater bulletins. From 1971 he was a secret confrere of the order of the Society of Jesus. On November 22, 1984, he was secretly ordained a priest. He continued to publish many professional articles thematically focused on opera, especially the work of Eugen Suchoň.

He is the author of a monograph dedicated to Sergei Prokofiev, co-author of the important work National Artist Eugen Suchoň (in the 2nd edition with Jozef Kresánek). For the first time, his work Slovak Opera maps and critically evaluates the development of this genre in our country.

After the revolution, he left the SAS and worked as an editor, for a while also the boss, of the emerging religious television broadcast. He taught liturgical recitation and singing at Aloisiana, the Theological Institute of St. Alojz SJ in Slovakia at the University of Trnava. From 1996 to 2001 he worked at the Church Conservatory in Bratislava as an external teacher of liturgy in the field of church music.
