Besides the early composition Tantum ergo for voice and harmonium (1926), the Slovak Mass (1983–1984) and the Three Prayers (1987) are Eugen Suchoň’s only works of sacred music. Both of them relinquish the harmonic backing of melody, remaining mostly in the diatonic pattern – the Slovak Mass uses above all the Lydian fourth. The Slovak Mass (sung in unison) does not put great demands on the ensemble, as far as the melodic ambit is concerned (D sharp above the middle C to E an octave higher); the Three Prayers were written for a lower male voice and are dedicated to Peter Mikuláš.
