Songs of Mercy for piano are a cycle of 12 variations developed from the main theme in my 2007 orchestral composition Clarissima, based on an idea originating three years earlier. What motivated me to return to this composition, and to rework it in a new form, was my encounter with the diary by Saint Maria Faustyna Kowalska, Divine Mercy in My Soul. I revised some compositions into diverse instrumental and vocal, chamber music as well as orchestral pieces. The piano cycle Songs of Mercy should be played as a whole in the given sequence. Individual parts of the cycle may be played individually or in combination. In combining selections, it is appropriate to put the pieces into pairs, triplets, or larger combinations in the order they appear in the cycle. For instance, Prayer and Canon; Hymn, Voice, and Psalm; Dance, Anthem, Chorale, and Song; Coda, In the Beginning, and Breath; Chorale, Song, Coda, and Breath; etc. The Songs of Mercy cycle came about gradually between 2014 and 2021. It is dedicated to my beloved wife Anna.
