The moon is askew, the arches are two, From nowhere to nowhere they rise. Virtuoso A piano is playing A serenade for the stars. A ladder sings the melody And rosebuds beat the bars. Thirteen Candles Let the candles burn to the memory Of those who dwell in my heart, Let their figures be alive By the spell of art. Pavol Simai Bridges associates to connections, and in this composition, Simai has truly united figures with little likeness to one another. Five winds play with a piano in a three-movement suite with titles such as \"Arches,\" \"Virtuoso\" and \"Thirteen Candles.\" The work was written in 1992 for the Prague Wind Quintet, which had performed Simai the year before at the international music festival \"Prague Spring.\" The music is inspired by batik paintings with the same titles painted by his wife, Jarmila Simai. The composer also contributed with short verses to add to the interpretive possibilities of the artworks (which adorn the cover and pages of this booklet.) A shivering tremolo is an important part of the first movement, \"Arches.\" Occasionally, the piece takes on a more consonant shape thanks to short solo passages by the pianist. In the second movement, \"Virtuoso,\" the staccato has a raucously mechanical character, with sharp, ticking motives. Do we hear a clockwork which has become undone? Or marionettes struck with dance fever? The final movement, \"Thirteen Candles,\" is much stricter, consisting of a linear and melodic movement taking place over a wandering piano voice, as if in a chaconne or passacaglia.

\n        (Hans Gunnar Peterson)
\n
\n
\n            Movements:
\n\n                Arches\n                \n
\n\n                Virtuos\n                \n
\n\n                Thirteen Candles\n                \n
\n
\n\n        \n
\n"}
