The work was composed by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710 - 1736) in 1733 as a comic intermezzo in two parts for his opera seria Il Prigioniero Superbo. While the opera itself failed at its premiere in September 1733, La Serva Padrona gained immense success on its own, first in Italy and later enthusiastically throughout Europe, where it became the uncrowned jewel of comic opera (opera buffa). The plot features a grumpy old bachelor, Uberto, and his resourceful maid, Serpina. Although they are constantly in conflict, with the help of the silent but crucial servant Vespone, Serpina eventually convinces Uberto to marry her - and so the maid becomes the true mistress of the house!
