Michael Gordon

American composer. He is co-founder of the collective Bang on a Can, specialising in performance of experimental compositions from New York’s Downtown. Studied composition at the Yale University. In his works he uses elements of minimalism and popular music. His composition style is associated with post-minimalism and totalism. Since 1991 has worked intensively with video (opera Van Gogh, premiered in Europe in Vienna in 1992, Weather composed in 1997 and multimedia project Shelter from 2005). In Decasia, a commission from Europaischer Musikmonat for the Basel Sinfonietta, the audience is encircled by the orchestra and large-scale projections of an experimental movie by Bill Morrison. Gotham (2004) for chamber orchestra also includes film, projections, lights and music composition for orchestra. Gordon is the recipient of multiple awards and grants and his music is regularly performed in Europe and the USA. His recordings include Timber (Cantaloupe), Weather (Nonesuch), Light is Calling (Nonesuch), Decasia (Cantaloupe), [purgatorio] POPOPERA (Cantaloupe), Van Gogh (Cantaloupe), Trance (Argo/Cantaloupe), and Big Noise from Nicaragua (CRI). His recent CD releases (2015) include Gotham and Dystopia.
