The expressiveness in the quintet Cartoons is more than burlesque, the tones even sound bitter. The phrases are mostly short, the mechanical and motor-like character is present to a high degree. Listen to the ticking in the first movement and the rolling threads of tones in the second, significantly titled \"Wheel of Fortune.\" Against playful turns and twists and a play with colors and their contrasts stands a stern discipline which allows the roots of the music to reach deeper than pure entertainment. The music gives the impression of having been filtered not only through a strict technique, but also through a sound temperament and its test of artistic substance.
