Miro Bázlik
Slovak composer, pianist and mathematician. He studied piano playing at Bratislava Conservatory (Anna Kafendová). During his studies at the Mathematical Physics Faculty at Charles University in Prague he took private lessons in composition (Jiří Eliáš) and piano playing (František Rauch, Ivan Moravec). He taught mathematics at the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava and concurrently studied composition with Ján Cikker at the Academy of Performing Arts (graduating in Music for Violin and Orchestra). From 1963 he was a freelance artist; later he was a teacher at the Academy of Performing Arts and at the Mathematical Physics Faculty in Comenius University. Bázlik has received numerous awards at home and abroad for his work. The cycle Spectra received an honourable mention at Boswile (1974), for Canticum 43 he won 1st Prize in the Queen Marie-José Competition (1974), for the oratorio Twelve he won the Ján Levoslav Bella Prize (1977) and for A Shepherd’s Ballad and A Shepherd’s Elegy he won the Prix de musique folklorique de Radio Bratislava (1977, 1983). Bázlik is also an active pianist. He has presented the complete work of J. S. Bach and the piano sonatas of W. A. Mozart and L. v. Beethoven. For radio he recorded both Bach’s volumes of Das Wohltemperierte Klavier. His composition Spectra II appeared in 2015 on the LP Experimental Studio Bratislava Series 1.
