In 2015, a certain collector accidentally purchased a small notated book at an auction along with several antiques. His interest in the origin of the artifact led him to contact the Alamire Foundation in Leuven. Experts in Renaissance polyphony could hardly believe their eyes. It was a chansonnier from the 15th or 16th century, and the dating and origin of the songbook are still under discussion. The discovery, comparable to finding a lost Rubens painting, immediately sparked great interest not only in musical circles. This unique artifact complements a group of sources known as the Chansonniers de la vallée de la Loire, which can be counted on the fingers of one hand. The last of the chansonniers from the Loire Valley was discovered almost a century ago. The Leuven Chansonnier contains twelve musical works that have not survived elsewhere and were forgotten and silent for 500 years. There are several indications that the owner or even the author of the chansonnier may have been a woman. A selection from the songbook will be performed at the Early Music Days festival by Ensemble Sollazzo, acclaimed specialists in medieval and early Renaissance music.
