Juraj Ruttkay, PhD. is a Slovak musician, musicologist, music educator, and publicist. He grew up in the musical environment of the Karvay family in the town of Vrútky, located in the Turiec region of northern Slovakia.
He studied violin performance at the Conservatory in Žilina and music theory at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava (VŠMU). Upon the recommendation of Professor Ladislav Burlas, he completed the advanced years of his studies in an accelerated programme. He subsequently earned his PhD from the Department of Music Education at the Faculty of Education of the University of Ostrava.
Throughout his academic and pedagogical career, he has taught both at the university level and at elementary schools of the arts. In addition to his teaching activities, he has been actively involved in performance and conducting, playing in a string orchestra in Vrútky and serving as conductor of a youth choir.
From 2001 to 2005, he was a member of the Board of the Turiec Seniorate of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Slovakia (ECAV). During the same period, he served as church cantor, organist, and choir conductor of the ECAV congregation in Vrútky. Between 2002 and 2004, he chaired the Seniorate Committee for Church Music and coordinated church music activities within the Turiec Seniorate.
He has served on numerous professional committees and competition juries, including the international student research competition Ars Paedagogica at the University of Hradec Králové and the regional string music festival Strunobranie in Kanianka. In 2011, he contributed to the national university student magazine Eurocampus Slovakia. He also served on the organizing committee of the scholarly seminar European Musical Culture in Mutual Relations and Influences, held within the framework of the World Congress of the Czech and Slovak Arts and Sciences Association in Žilina in 2012. In 2012 and 2013, he participated in organizing the colloquia Musicology and Contemporary Musical Culture at the Department of Music of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Žilina.
Juraj Ruttkay regularly participates in scholarly conferences and is the author of numerous academic articles, studies, and reviews. He has published the monographs Transformations of Musical Culture in Vrútky I (2008) and Transformations of Musical Culture in Vrútky II (2010). He is a regular contributor to the regional periodical Vrútočan and to the weekly newspaper Evanjelický posol spod Tatier (Evangelical Messenger from Beneath the Tatras). Through his scholarly, journalistic, and organizational activities, he has made a longstanding contribution to the cultural life of the Turiec region.
In 2008 and 2011, he was nominated for the position of Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Žilina. In 2008, he received the Commemorative Award of the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Žilina in recognition of his contribution to the establishment, development, and growth of the faculty.
