Július Fujak is a Slovak music aesthete and semiotician, composer of unconventional music, musician, university lecturer, and organizer of musical events. He also researches independent culture and postmodern art. He was a member of the International Semiotic Society (ISSS) based in Vienna, served on the jury of the Czech Radio Bohemia Prix 2010 – Radio Art section in Poděbrady, and participated in the editorial team of Ex‑tempore on Radio Devín (2005–2009). Since 2005, he has been on the editorial board of Vlna, a magazine on contemporary art and culture.

 

Július has lectured at the California Institute of the Arts and at the Arnold Schoenberg Institute, University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He has presented at ICMS world congresses in Imatra (Finland), Rome (Italy), Kraków (Poland), Louvain (Belgium); at the 8th World Semiotic Congress in Lyon (France); at the Institut für Slawistik in Graz (Austria); at GWZO Universität Leipzig (Germany); at the Academy of Music in Kraków; at HTF AMU in Prague and HF JAMU in Brno (Czech Republic); and in Slovakia at Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, Comenius University in Bratislava, and Ján Albrecht Music and Art Academy in Banská Štiavnica.

 

He has performed widely across Europe and the United States. Collaborations include work with The California EAR Unit (USA), Palinckx (NL/UK), Zloději Uší (CZ), Žena s blchou (SK), and artists such as Jon Rose (AUS), Veryan Weston (UK), Franz Hautzinger (A), Zsolt Sőrés (H), Ludivine Allegue (F), and Slovak musicians including Vladimír Merta, Jana Lewitová, Jan Kavan, Mikoláš Chadima, David Šubík (CZ), Marián Varga, Zuzana Homolová, J. B. Kladivo, Braňo Jobus, Peter Katina, and Jozef Lupták. His discography spans over 20 titles on domestic labels (Hevhetia, Vlna, Animartis, Azyl) and international labels (Kunstradio Wien, Globus International, His Voice Praha).

 

In addition to composing across genres, he develops “comprovized” music—live-composed performances alongside film. His soundtrack improv to Nosferatu (F. W. Murnau, 1922) with tEóRia OtraSu premiered at festivals such as Alternativa (Prague, 2003), Bratislava’s New Music Evenings (2003), and Skleněná louka (Brno, 2004). Since 2004, he has collaborated with Vladimír Merta, Jana Lewitová, and tEóRia OtraSu on provarational music for Slovakia’s first silent film Jánošík (J. Siakeľ, 1921), shown at festivals such as Expozice nové hudby (Brno, 2005), Leipzig film clubs (2009), and London’s Barbican (2013). His work has been broadcast on radio stations including FRS Stuttgart, Helsinki, Madrid, Amsterdam, and Vienna.

 

He has participated in cross-media projects: 1995–2001 with Brno’s Skleněná louka collective on projects by Zdeněk Plachý (e.g. Těžké doby bez taktu, 1997; Doprovodní soubor, 1998), and the Dutch group Palinckx (In Residence, 2000), as well as with rock trio Zloději Uší (1999–2001). In 2008, he collaborated with Ludivine Allegue on the intermedia project Wordless (Slovak Institute in Rome; Synagogue in Nitra). In 2009 he began working with Mikoláš Chadima on the XAFOO project, performed at festivals including Genius Loci (Levoča, 2009), Alternative (Prague, 2009, 2012), and Art’s Birthday (Prague, 2014). From 2014 to 2016, he worked with Ján Boleslav Kladivo on the experimental project “Klesajúce klenby”.
