Prof. ThDr. Rastislav Adamko, PhD. is a Slovak musicologist, violinist, educator, and theologian. He focuses on musical medieval studies and contemporary, especially sacred, music. He lectures, conducts research, and contributes to musical life in Ružomberok.
Rastislav Adamko studied violin performance at the Conservatory in Žilina in the class of Ľubomír Kudja. He received his theological education at Comenius University, at the Theological Institute in Spišská Kapitula, and at Katolícka univerzita v Lubline. He completed his musicological studies at the Catholic University of Lublin in Poland.
Until 2004 he served as an assistant professor at the Department of Musical Arts of the Faculty of Education at Katolícka univerzita v Ružomberku. He later headed the Department of Music, and since 2017 he has been Vice-Dean for Science and Arts at the Faculty of Education of this institution. He has lectured at the Theological Institute in Spišská Kapitula – Spišské Podhradie and at the Institute of Musicology at the Catholic University of Lublin.
In his research, he focuses on preserved musical artefacts from the territory of present-day Slovakia (music-liturgical manuscripts, their fragments, incunabula, printed codices) from the medieval period. He is the author of three source editions – Spišský graduál Juraja z Kežmarku (The Spiš Gradual of Juraj of Kežmarok), Spišský antifonár (The Spiš Antiphonary), and Nitrianský antifonár (The Nitra Antiphonary). He is also co-author of the monograph Stredoveké pramene cirkevnej hudby na Slovensku (Medieval Sources of Church Music in Slovakia), the monograph Košický graduál (The Košice Gradual), as well as author of a monograph on chants in the Roman Missal (Kantylacje liturgiczne w mszale słowackim „Rímsky misál“ z 1980 roku – Liturgical Chant Forms in the Slovak Roman Missal of 1980).
Another focus of his scholarly interest is hymnology. Since 2002 he has been a board member of the international hymnological research society IAH. A high citation impact documents recognition of the author as a respected authority.
As a music educator, he primarily teaches musical forms, musical and aural analysis, and issues of intonation. He is the author of the university textbook Náuka o hudobných formách (Theory of Musical Forms).
R. Adamko completed two research stays abroad (Poland), mainly focused on medieval music research, as well as numerous short-term Erasmus mobilities in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Poland.
He served as editor-in-chief of the journal for sacred music Adoramus Te. Since 2000 he has been a member of the diocesan (Rožňava) and national liturgical commission and the music subcommission. He participates in the preparation of the new nationwide Slovak liturgical hymnal.
As a violinist, he has performed both as a soloist and as a member of a chamber ensemble of the Department of Music of the Faculty of Education of the Catholic University at numerous concert events in Slovakia and abroad. He is the author of many liturgical chants and several choral compositions.
