Hana Hegerová was a Czech singer of Slovak origin. She became renowned for her convincing interpretation of chansons by domestic authors as well as songs from the repertoire of Édith Piaf (Mylord), Jacques Brel (Lásko prokletá / “Accursed Love”), the songwriting duo Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht (Surabaya Johnny, Barbara Song), and others. Among her greatest hits are also Levandulová, Obraz Doriana Graye (The Picture of Dorian Gray), Rozvod (Divorce), Denim Blue, and more. She mainly collaborated with Peter Hapka and lyricist Pavel Kopt. The audience and critics were impressed by her meticulous selection of repertoire, but especially by her cultivated dark alto and ability to dramatically interpret lyrics with seamless transitions into parlando. She performed numerous solo concerts both at home and abroad (Switzerland, Belgium, former West Germany, Argentina, Canada, Poland, former USSR, and others). She is a recipient of many awards.
