Gejza Dusík

“As a composer, Dusík was trained in the Viennese salon and operetta traditions and gradually sought to found a genre term for his original Slovak production. The focus of his work became operetta, but in addition he also created a lot of pieces of so-called “higher popular”, which has found application in radio broadcasts and proms. In the operetta genre he came to create his own “Dusík's” melodic and harmonic expression, which can be identified in the operettas Modrá ruža / Blue Rose, Dvorná lóža / Court Lodge and Hrnčiarsky bál / Ball of Potters, as well as in many songs (eg. Pieseň o vlasti / Song About the Homeland). Dusík is one of the founders of Slovak tango and by his diverse and rich song work, containing about 300 songs, he became the main representative of Slovak popular music. In 1965 he was awarded the title of Merited Artist and in 1988 the title of National Artist. In his honor the Gejza Dusík Award is annually awarded by the Slovak Performing and Mechanical Rights Society for the largest share in the broadcasting of Slovak original music.“
