MUSA ANTIQUA as a highly specialized ensemble was established in 1986 after years of independent study of ancient, medieval and ethnic music. Its members played on copies of medieval and Renaissance instruments to the needs of the repertoire, performing mostly in Gothic costumes.
The ensemble realized a number of concerts through whole Slovakia as well as abroad (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary). In 1998 it attended a festival of early days on historical instruments in Prague “Old Music in Summer Prague”, and in 1999 in Kobenhaven at the International Festival og Sigojner Kultur. The ensemble performed old Jewish music from 15th century, Sefarad Spanish romances from 15th century, old music of Romas from Slovakia and all Europe, songs from Tabulatura Vietoris and Cithara Sanctorum, music from Slovakia since times of the Gentiles to the Middle Ages, music in medieval Egypt during the Mameluke era, medieval music from Slovakia (Ján Sylván: Sedm žalmu kagícich a giné spewy, Spišské zlomky, Trnava Manuscript, Košice Fragments, Spish Antiphone). The repertoire of the ensemble was unique, each new program was the entire premiere.
