The Žilina Mixed Choir has a tradition of nearly 70 years (founded in 1954).

It consists of approximately sixty singers, making it one of the largest ensembles of its kind in Slovakia. The choir has achieved top placements and awards at numerous international competitions.

The choir’s repertoire includes secular and sacred works by Slovak and international composers arranged for choral performance. It has also performed several major works of world and Slovak vocal-instrumental literature (Requiem by W. A. Mozart, Mass in A-flat major and Mass in G major by F. Schubert, Mass in D major by A. Dvořák, Messiah by G. F. Handel, Messa di Gloria by G. Puccini, Requiem by P. Krška, Kyrie by P. Iršai, and many other compositions).

The choir has a long-standing collaboration with the State Chamber Orchestra Žilina. The ensemble is the main organizer of the International Festival of Choral Art Žilina – Voce Magna, within which the 1st International Choral Competition was held in 2017. In 2021, the festival celebrated its 11th edition.

Throughout its history, the choir has been led by several prominent conductors: Jozef Potočár (1954–1955), Ignác Jančár (1955–1957), Anton Kállay (1957–1989), and since 1989 it has been conducted by Štefan Sedlický.

The ensemble also oversees the children’s choir Žiliňáčik, which is part of the Singing House and operates under the patronage of the Žilina Mixed Choir with the support of the City of Žilina.
