The choir was founded in 1971 at the Municipal Cultural Center in Bratislava under the name Bratislava Chamber Choir. The Bratislava City Choir has performed under the current name since 1979. It was founded by conductor Anton Kállay, who also conducted the Choir beginning in 1976; later it was led by Valentin Iljin. From 1977 until now the choir has continually been led by Prof. Ladislav Holásek, under whose leadership the choir has established itself at the forefront of vocal ensembles recognized at home and abroad.

The choir has artistically collaborated with leading domestic and foreign music ensembles and performers. It has achieved excellent awards on the international music festivals of choirs (Arezzo, Gorizia, Llangolen, Middlesbrough, Spittal, Miedzyzdroje, Karditsa, Pollheim).

During its existence the choir has built a wide repertoire including works from all periods, including premieres of compositions of contemporary Slovak authors. It has realized a number of recordings for radio and television and released several CDs, LPs and SPs.
