Of the four requiems that Bella mentions in his autobiography, only the Requiem in C minor for three-part choir and orchestra has survived. The exact date of its composition is unknown, although it is generally assumed to have been written during the first years of the composer's stay in Kremnica.
The work is characterised by a tendency towards monothematicism and noble simplicity in every aspect of its musical texture. Structurally, it displays a preference for the balanced symmetry of Classical phrase construction, while its harmonic language is based on the principal harmonic functions without significant excursions into more remote keys.
Although conceived as functional music for a clearly defined liturgical purpose, the Requiem has retained its artistic and aesthetic value, which continues to resonate with audiences today.
