During his service to the Catholic Church in Banská Bystrica and Kremnica, Ján Levoslav Bella composed several dozen sacred works for the liturgy, including six Masses for choir and orchestra that have survived. The Missa in D belongs to the group of Masses written during Bella’s years in Kremnica (1869–1881).
A work of artistic maturity, the Mass has been preserved in the manuscript copy prepared by the Kremnica organist František Janeček.
