Wenzel Kallusch (Václav Kaluš) was one of the leading musical figures in Bratislava during the period preceding the establishment of the city's Church Music Society. The manuscript of his Variations for Double Bass and Orchestra is preserved in Bratislava. The work is based on the Russian or Ukrainian Cossack song The Cossack Rode Beyond the Danube (Jechal kozak za Dunaj), one of the most popular themes for sets of variations in the late Classical and early Romantic periods. Kallusch’s composition is exceptional in assigning the solo role to the double bass.
