This edition of the complete songs for voice and piano by Dezider Kardoš, one of Slovakia’s most distinguished symphonists, reveals a relatively little-known aspect of this leading representative of Slovak musical modernism. The volume includes Kardoš’s early song cycle Songs of Love, setting poems by the Slovak poets Valentín Beniak and Maša Haľamová and regarded as a gem of Slovak vocal lyricism. The two cycles Songs from Eastern Slovakia present the composer’s own arrangements of Slovak folk songs. The children’s song cycle Let Us Help the Nightingale is intended for the youngest performers.
