Ladislav Stanček belonged to the generation of composers that laid the foundations of Slovakia’s professional musical life, yet paradoxically remains perhaps the least well known among the pioneers of the country’s modern music. Vocal lyricism occupied a central place in his oeuvre, and he may be regarded as one of the first Slovak composers to explore the musical setting of Slovak poetry in a systematic way. The first volume of this edition is devoted to Stanček’s settings of literary texts. It includes the following works: Two Songs, Op. 3a, b (Brno, 1927; Prievidza, 1928); Four Songs, Op. 7 (Bratislava, 1929, 1930); Let Us Pray, Golden Child, Op. 15c (Bratislava, 1932); A Funeral Message to Paris (In Memory of Štefánik), Op. 16 (1932); Three Songs to Poems by Maša Haľamová, Op. 25 (Bratislava, 1934); and The Dead, a song cycle to poems by Andrej Žarnov, Op. 47 (Spišské Podhradie, 1942).
The second volume, available separately, brings together Stanček’s arrangements of Slovak folk songs for voice and piano.
