Ladislav Stanček belonged to the generation of composers that laid the foundations of Slovakia’s professional musical life, yet paradoxically remains perhaps the least well known among the pioneers of the country’s modern music. Vocal lyricism occupied a central place in his oeuvre, and he may be regarded as one of the first Slovak composers to explore the musical setting of Slovak poetry in a systematic way. This second volume brings together Stanček’s arrangements of Slovak folk songs for voice and piano. It includes the collections: Ten Slovak Folk Songs for Tenor and Piano, Op. 21 (1933); Twelve Slovak Folk Songs for Medium Voice and Piano, Op. 24 (1934); and Twelve Slovak National Songs for High Voice (Tenor) and Piano, Op. 39 (1939).
The first volume of this edition, available separately, is devoted to Stanček’s settings of literary texts.
