Fate and the Ideal (1874) is the only symphonic poem by Ján Levoslav Bella and at the same time the first orchestral work by a Slovak composer to be performed publicly. It was composed during Bella's tenure in Kremnica at the initiative of his friend, the Czech music critic and promoter of Slavic music Ludvít Procházka. The work was premiered in Prague in 1876, where it was received with considerable acclaim. Bella later revised the composition, and it is this revised version that became established in the concert repertoire. The work is a characteristic example of the Late Romantic symphonic poem, in which the composer musically portrays the inner conflict between fate and the ideal. It also possesses an autobiographical dimension, reflecting Bella's personal struggle between his vocation as a priest and his desire to devote himself fully to music. Stylistically, the composition follows the Lisztian tradition of the symphonic poem while also exhibiting clear influences of German Romanticism.
