Fantasy on the Motifs of the Rákoczy March

The Rákóczi Song was originally a Kuruc lament mourning the misfortunes of Hungary under Habsburg rule and calling upon Francis II Rákóczi to come to the aid of his people. During the nineteenth century, it evolved into the popular anonymous Rákóczi March, which had already gained widespread popularity before the Revolution of 1848.

Bella’s Fantasy on the Rákóczi March was most likely composed between 1871 and 1872. Its creation may have been inspired by the composer’s personal and musical association with the Hungarian violin virtuoso Ede Reményi.
