Originally entitled Pannonhalma, this work was composed in 1931 as an anonymous submission to a composition competition organized by the journal Magyar Kórus. The aim of the competition was to promote the renewal of church music through works that would be accessible to schoolchildren in any parish while at the same time possessing genuine artistic merit. In the competition results, the work was praised as one of the compositions that came closest to fulfilling the competition's objectives and, despite its simplicity, was noted for its artistic refinement, idiomatic use of church modes, and freedom from formulaic writing.

The present edition of the Mass for Children's Choir and Organ (or Harmonium) is based on the original version of the work, incorporating additions and textual revisions taken from the composer's revised and expanded version for four-part male choir and organ.
