Suchoň’s Slovak Monophonic Mass was the composer’s personal response to the liturgical reforms initiated by the Second Vatican Council (the 22nd Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church), convened by Pope John XXIII. During the Council, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium) was adopted, introducing reforms that simplified and shortened the liturgy and permitted the use of national languages in the Roman Catholic rite. Suchoň composed his Slovak Mass between 1977 and 1978, making use not only of the Slovak language but also of melodic inflections rooted in the modal foundations of Slovak folk song. The Mass consists of five movements, with the composer combining the Sanctus and Benedictus into a single movement. During the performance of the liturgical text, the parts of the Priest and the Congregation alternate in a responsorial manner.
