Bella’s Old Church Slavonic Lord’s Prayer, composed in 1863, differs from other settings of this prayer in Old Church Slavonic through its much more extensive use of polyphony within a four-part male choir. This edition includes both the first publication of the work (1863), incorporating revisions preserved in the archived printed edition, and the second edition prepared by Miloš Ruppeldt.
Bella dedicated the composition to Tomáš Červeň (1793–1876). He also dedicated another of his liturgical works in the vernacular rather than in Latin, To deň!, to Červeň. The text combines two verses from Psalm 118 in a Slovak translation, forming a hymn of praise for four-part male choir in D major.
Bella’s Prayer of Saint Cyril to the Hundreds, Op. 15, was composed in 1869 for four-part male choir with baritone solo. The work sets four couplets from a poem by the Moravian public figure, ethnologist, and theologian František Sušil (1804–1868). Bella also appended a letter to the seminarians of Olomouc, offering valuable insight into his interpretative vision; this letter is reproduced in the present edition.
