As early as the 1860s, Ján Levoslav Bella became actively involved in the Slovak National Revival movement. This engagement resulted in a number of secular choral and instrumental works composed in the emerging Slovak literary language. During his studies at the Pázmáneum in Vienna (1863–1865), Bella compiled and published, in two volumes, a cycle of four-part male choruses entitled Slovak Four-Part Songs for Male Choir (Slovenské štvorspevy pre mužský zbor). Together, these volumes represent one of the earliest attempts to establish a choral repertoire in the Slovak language, at a time when none yet existed.
