Chamber music forms an important part of Viliam Figuš-Bystrý’s oeuvre, continuing the traditions of European Classicism and Romanticism. Among his chamber works are two string trios.
String Trio No. 1 in G major, Op. 58 (I. Allegro ma non troppo – II. Poco adagio – III. Scherzo. Allegretto – IV. Allegro moderato) was composed in two creative phases separated by an interval of fifteen years. The composer completed the first three movements in 1921, as confirmed by the autograph manuscript, which bears the date 16 December 1921 at the end of the third movement. During a revision of his works in 1936, Figuš-Bystrý reworked the trio and added a fourth movement to the original three. The first movement is in sonata form, the two central movements draw on ternary song form and the dance scherzo, while the finale is built as a dynamically flexible rondo. This publication marks the work’s first printed edition and includes both the full score and the individual instrumental parts.
