The three sonatinas for violin and piano come from Figuš’s first creative period. They reflect an educational intention as well as inspiration from the poetry of “children’s music.” Their creation was prompted not only by the Banská Bystrica chamber circle, but also by thoughts of his son Viliam Figuš Jr., who was 8 to 10 years old at the time and beginning his musical education. The technical difficulty of the sonatinas therefore corresponds to the level of a beginner musician, yet they can also serve as inspiring works for mature performers. Figuš’s three sonatinas belong among the first Slovak violin-and-piano sonatinas.
The volume contains:
Sonatina No. 1 in G major for violin and piano, Op. 37 (1913)
I. Allegro moderato – II. Poco adagio – III. Scherzo. Allegro–Trio – IV. Allegretto
Sonatina No. 2 in C major for violin and piano, Op. 38 (1914)
I. Allegro moderato – II. Poco adagio – III. Allegretto
Sonatina No. 3 in D minor for violin and piano, Op. 42 (1915)
I. Allegro – II. Andante – III. Allegretto
The publication includes the score and a violin part with suggested bowings.
