The book was written in the mid-1950s and it represents chronologically the second major synthesis of Slovak ethnomusicology. Drawing on Jozef Kresánek’s The Slovak Folk Song from a Musical Viewpoint, it develops the argument into a more elaborate concept that takes into consideration the most recent results of the on-the-ground research together with current trends in ethnomusicology. The outline of the history of Slovak ethnomusicology from its beginnings up to the middle of the 20th century, included in the introduction to the book, is at the same time the first attempt at the history of this scientific field in Slovakia.
