The first "handbook" by this tandem of authors was How to Read a Score. In it, they examined the essential characteristics of a score and discussed the ways of deciphering this "record of music" in the form of graphic signs, so as to arrive at the sound of music. Equally important was the question of conveying the composer's intention to the listener. On Conducting is thus a natural follow up, a kind of summary of the conductor's basic tasks. The information is not intended for advanced students of conducting, it is rather suitable for beginners or choirmasters of amateur or church choirs, as well as for all those who are interested in conducting.
