This volume presents the complete collection of songs by Ján Levoslav Bella for voice and piano, comprising a total of 37 art songs set to German (23), Czech (2), Hungarian (2), and Slovak (10) texts, reflecting the multicultural character of the Central European environment.
Bella enriched the Slovak art song tradition with a highly individual style that synthesised elements of the Schubert–Schumann Lied tradition, domestic influences, and his own distinctive creative approach. His song output may be divided into three creative periods: in the first, he set German and Czech poetry; in the second, German poetry; and in the third, Slovak poetry, while also revising his earlier Czech songs.
