Six Duos for Two Violins

Within the Monumenta Musicae Slovacae series, specifically its “Zimmermann” edition of musical sources, we have so far published, alongside parallel audio recordings, a selection of Anton Zimmermann’s symphonic and Mass compositions. This volume presents an example of the composer’s chamber music. From a stylistic perspective, Duets, Op. 1 by Anton Zimmermann belong to the transitional period between the early and mature Classical eras. This is reflected in their melodic writing, harmonic texture, tonal and modulatory structure, ornamentation, dynamics, and formal design. The works display Zimmermann’s characteristic musical language, distinguished by rich inventiveness, depth of thought and expression, rhythmic diversity, masterful instrumental writing, as well as elegance, charm, and nobility of musical expression.
