    37. Situations is a collection of short piano pieces.
      The purpose of Situations is:
      - to keep listeners alert,
      - to inspire listeners to action – transforming
them into a performer (the scores of
Situations have been published, the pieces are
      of varying technical difficulty),
      - to address young pianists – whether in
primary music school or musical academies –
      and to refresh their repertoire,
      - to create an impulse for creative and
      independent piano performance.
      The reason behind Situations:
There is an endless number of situations,
constellations, and combinations in our everyday
lives. Not only do we “intertwine” in manifold
ways – people, animals, objects, places – but each
entanglement has its own atmosphere. The piano
pieces contained in the Situations collection
are themselves, in fact, combinations of various
encounters – in life, and on the keyboard: ten
fingers, more than eighty piano keys, two pedals,
two feet, a dust cloth (one piece is played with
a dust cloth), a glockenspiel (one piece is played
with a glockenspiel), and all sorts of things.
      Diverse situations and distinct atmospheres.
      How Situations came into being:
My wife Anna is a piano teacher and asked me to

write a piece for her student who wanted to play
something mysterious, obscure, and a little scary.
The piece Mysterious was born. The teacher and
student’s critical eyes and ears requested another
piece – a certain rectification: this was the origin
of Riddle. In stages, 26 more pieces followed.
      Anna is my inspiration.
In the end, there are more than 28 pieces.
The reason is that some pieces exist in two
versions – either there are two different
interpretations (Chords) or a second version
for piano four hands (Glockenspiel and Piano,
Prelude). In addition, there are bonus four-hand
piano pieces from the forthcoming collection
      (Little Tarantulas, Arpeggios, Gong, Scales,
      Pitter-patter).
      What came next:
I played Situations for my colleagues and
students at the Department of Music Education
of the Faculty of Education of Comenius
University. Ivan Šiller was present, too. After
some time, he came up with the idea of bringing
together György Kurtág’s pieces from his
collection Games ( Játekok) with my Situations
pieces. The result was the Ein Kinderspiel
      concert project.
As time passed, Ivan had another idea:
      to publish Situations.
As time passed, Ivan had another idea: to
      record Situations.

My gratitude for everything goes to Ivan
      Šiller.
On this CD, the composer plays his own
music. Only after some time did I realize that the
composer and player inside me were two entities.
Having played several concerts when Situations
was performed together with Kurtág’s Games
(Bratislava, Nitra, Poprad, Nové Zámky, Poltár,
      Banská Štiavnica, Púchov, Topoľčany, Prague,
      Hradec Králové, Brno, Olomouc, Litoměřice),
the player moved further and further away from
the intentions of the composer. During the
preparations for the recording, I returned to
a close reading of the original score (especially
to the original tempi and dynamics). I was
shocked to find out that my interpretation was
really different from the original scores. In some
cases, it was not possible, but I tried to return
to the composer’s original intentions – to avoid
angering him. This was quite a complicated task,
but Ivan Šiller in the role of music director kept
      an eye out for me.
      Situations – encounters, combinations,
atmospheres: the human being, body, mind, ear,
eye, piano key, finger, foot, back, joy, sadness,
and smell. I hope you enjoy listening and playing,
      too.
