PhDr. Janka Petőczová, CSc. is a Slovak musicologist, music publicist, and editor. Her research focuses on music history and historiography, the history of music and musical culture in the 16th and 17th centuries, with an emphasis on musical sources preserved in the territory of Slovakia and on music paleography. She also studies the history of music in Evangelical Lutheran cantorates in the free royal towns, Baroque polyphony and polychoral music in historical music manuscripts from the Spiš region, as well as historical membranophonic musical instruments.

 

She has written several important monographs that map the musical history of present-day Slovakia. These include Historické organové pozitívy na Slovensku (2022, Historical Organ Positives in Slovakia), Hudba ako kultúrny fenomén v dejinách Spiša (2014, Music as a Cultural Phenomenon in the History of Spiš), and Polychorická hudba I–III (1999, Polychoral Music I–III). She has also published numerous scholarly articles and papers in both Slovak and international academic journals, proceedings from musicological conferences, and other scientific outputs.

 

She is a member of professional organizations and associations such as the International Musicological Society, Internationale Heinrich-Schütz-Gesellschaft e.V., the Prešov Music Society Súzvuk, and the Spiš Historical Society Levoča. In 2010 and 2011, she completed research stays abroad at the Institute of Art, Polish Academy of Sciences (Instytut Sztuki PAN) in Warsaw, Poland.

 

Janka Petőczová has been the principal investigator of several domestic research grants: Pramene renesančnej a barokovej hudby na Spiši a v Európe (VEGA, 2013–2016, Sources of Renaissance and Baroque Music in Spiš and Europe) Hudba ako kultúrny fenomén v dejinách Spiša (VEGA, 2010–2012, Music as a Cultural Phenomenon in the History of Spiš) Musica Scepusii Veteris – hudobno-kultúrne dedičstvo Spiša a jeho začleňovanie do dnešných tradícií (VEGA, 2007–2009, Musica Scepusii Veteris [Early Music in Spiš] – the Musical-Cultural Heritage of Spiš and Its Integration into Today’s Traditions) Polychorická hudba Jána Šimbrackého v kontexte európskeho hudobného baroka (VEGA, 2004–2006, The Polychoral Music of Ján Šimbracký in the Context of European Baroque Music) In the Musica Scepusii Veteris project, Petőczová serves as the editor of a source-critical music edition series that publishes original handwritten musical sources relevant to the history of the Spiš region, as well as its coordinator.

In 2016, the Music Fund of Slovakia awarded Janka Petőczová the Jozef Kresánek Prize.
