Prof. PaeDr. Eva Michalová, CSc. was a Slovak musicologist, university professor, music publicist, and organizer of cultural life. She graduated from the University of Education in Bratislava, majoring in Slovak language and literature and music education. After completing her studies, she began working as a piano teacher at the Department of Music Education at the Pedagogical Institute in Banská Bystrica, where she spent her entire professional life. Her work included membership in expert commissions, publishing and research activities, and lecturing.
In her scientific work, she focused on music pedagogy (Hudba v škole – Music in School, 1977), music aesthetics (Estetika hudby – Aesthetics of Music, 2001), and music historiography (Anleitung zum Klavierschlagen Michala Godru – Instructions for Playing the Piano by Michal Godra, 1982). She regularly wrote reviews and critiques, primarily about concerts and opera events in Banská Bystrica. These texts served as a valuable source of information for monographs about personalities of the Banská Bystrica music scene, such as Dagmar Rohová or Štefan Babjak (Mária Tomanová, 2019).
Eva Michalová authored scientific studies, textbooks, and teaching materials for universities, and prepared dozens of expert papers presented at both domestic (lectures at musicological conferences of the Composers' Union on piano, choral, and song compositions – Ján Levoslav Bella, Viliam Figuš-Bystrý, Mikuláš Schneider Trnavský, Ján Móry) and international conferences. She regularly contributed articles and reviews to Hudobný život (Music Life) and other periodicals.
She also prepared several scripts for radio, such as Štyria ako jeden – Trávničkovo kvarteto (Four as One – Trávniček’s Quartet, Slovak Radio Bratislava, aired September 21, 1987), and Dni sláčikovej hudby – 1. ročník (Days of String Music – 1st Edition, Music News of Czechoslovak Radio, BB studio, aired July 18, 1990). As a dramaturge, she collaborated on the script for an evening concert of opera soloists for Slovkoncert Banská Bystrica (1989), and co-authored exhibition scripts for the Literary and Music Museum: Hudba v Banskej Bystrici (Music in Banská Bystrica, 1976), SNP v hudbe (The Slovak National Uprising in Music, 1984), and Viliam Figuš-Bystrý a jeho opera Detvan (Viliam Figuš-Bystrý and his Opera Detvan, 1986).
Externally, Eva Michalová taught at the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU) in Bratislava and at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, where she was personally involved in its founding in 1997. For a time, she served as the head of the Department of Theoretical Subjects at the Faculty of Performing Arts. She also contributed to the establishment of the Ján Levoslav Bella Conservatory in Banská Bystrica in 1992. She performed as a répétiteur at several concerts of the Department of Music Education in Banská Bystrica (1969–1974).
Among other positions (mentioned above), Eva Michalová was a member of the evaluation committee for cultural programs at Slovkoncert in Banská Bystrica, the preparatory committee for music events at the Park of Culture and Leisure in Banská Bystrica, and the Slovak Society for Music Education in Bratislava and Banská Bystrica. She was also involved in the preparatory committee for the Viliam Figuš-Bystrý Festival in Banská Bystrica and for the international festival Akademická Banská Bystrica (Academic Banská Bystrica). Furthermore, she was a member of the musicological section of the Union of Slovak Composers.
