The formation Martin Uherek Quartet is a group of musicians gathered around the prominent Slovak jazz musician and educator Klaudius Kováč. It was founded in Banská Bystrica in 2008. The quartet has participated in several competitions, including the international competition in Tarnów, Poland, where it won 2nd place in the younger category. They also became laureates of the Slovak competition Jazz Christmas 2008. At both competitions, the band members also received several awards for individual solo performances.
In 2010, the quartet received the New Faces of Slovak Jazz award for convincing instrumental performances in the spirit of jazz, as well as an award for young talents at the Bratislava Jazz Days 2012 with the project Remembering Bud, focused on the work of pianist Bud Powell. The group also performed on the main stage of the Bratislava Jazz Days 2013, presenting a new programme titled Remembering Monk, dedicated to interpreting the music of Thelonious Monk.
In 2016, the band recorded its first CD Príbehy jazzu (2016), followed by Príbehy jazzu Vol. 2 – Ako vznikal jazz (2018) and Príbehy jazzu Vol. 3 – Začiatky moderného jazzu (2021).
Throughout its activity in the jazz scene, both the group and its individual members have achieved numerous successes and performed at many concerts and festivals in Slovakia and abroad. A notable highlight was their performance at the United Europe Jazz Festival.
Their work continues the musical legacy of jazz legends of the 20th century such as Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, and Bud Powell.
