The Double Bass Quartet was founded in 2010 in Bratislava and is one of the ensembles that emerged alongside the activities of the civic association Slovak Double Bass Club. The members of the quartet are leading Slovak performers whose aim is to present the possibilities of the double bass not only as an orchestral instrument, but also as a solo instrument.
The quartet’s repertoire includes unusual arrangements ranging from classical music through jazz and swing to popular music. In addition, the ensemble specializes in performing original works written for four double basses by composers from both the international and Slovak music scenes. The quartet’s debut CD from 2015 features exclusively original compositions by authors such as M. Lejava, L. Chuťková, S. Palúch, M. Comendant, V. Jaš, P. Bodnár, J. Korza, J. Gréner, H. Neugebauer, and R. Catalá.
The ensemble has completed a number of successful projects (including concert programmes with the singer Martin Babjak and Mária Čírová) as well as stage productions (including the world premiere of the opera Noe by Vítězslav Kubička).
