Spectrum Quartett is a string quartet primarily dedicated to classical and contemporary art music, as well as cross-genre projects. Drawing on the broad musical backgrounds of its members, the ensemble incorporates elements of folk music, jazz, and improvisation into its artistic language.
The members of the quartet began performing together in 2009 as the core of the Orfeus Ensemble, later known as EnsembleSpectrum, an ensemble presenting works by students of the Department of Composition and Conducting at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. Their continued collaborations at the Orfeus contemporary music festival, as well as concerts within the Young Composers Showcase and festivals such as Soozvuk and AsynChrónie, eventually led to the establishment of the independent string quartet in 2012.
In 2015, the ensemble performed for Slovak Radio as part of the Ensemble Ricercata concert series and appeared at the Faculty of Music and Dance of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava during the Grieg Day project, followed by the related Norwegian Days project in 2016.
Members of Spectrum Quartett contributed to the album Presence by jazz pianist Valér Miko and have collaborated in concert performances with Jana Kirschner and the group Ľudové Mladistvá. The ensemble also appeared in the dance production The Abduction of Europe by Debris Company featuring music by Vladislav Šarišský.
They have performed at festivals including BRaK, Grape Festival, One Day Jazz Festival, Hudba dneška, Konvergencie, Nová slovenská hudba, Pro Musica Nostra, Hortus Artis, and others.
Throughout its activity, the quartet has premiered numerous works by Slovak contemporary composers, including Marián Lejava, Ľuboš Bernáth, Jana Kmiťová, Jevgenij Iršai, Ľubica Čekovská, Richard Grimm, and Michael Blažek.
In 2022, the ensemble released its debut album Cubus, followed by the project Pictures from Slovakia (Obrázky zo Slovenska), which was released on CD in 2026. Prior to the album release, the project had already been presented at events and festivals including Grand Prix Svetozára Stračinu (2023), FOLK EXPO Slovakia (2023), Východná Folklore Festival (2024), Pohoda Festival (2024), and Viva Musica! (2025).
For the authorship of the musical concept, arrangements, and co-dramaturgy of the concert programme Pictures from Slovakia, Ján Kružliak Jr. was nominated for the Tatra Bank Foundation Award 2023.
