The harp is one of the most impressive and, at the same time, one of the oldest musical instruments. It is often regarded as a symbol of musical art. It is therefore somewhat paradoxical that original compositions for the harp are not very numerous. George Frideric Handel’s Concerto enjoys great popularity. Other composers have explored the harp as part of their desire to “experiment with many instruments” (notably the highly versatile Guillaume Connesson). Louis Spohr and Jekaterina Walter-Kühne, however, wrote masterful original works for the instrument. Vocal music is a true wellspring of music and musicality. The human voice is the most natural musical instrument and influences almost every form of music. Folk music is an inexhaustible source of vocal expression; traditional songs have also had a significant impact on the work of experienced masters (Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský, Eugen Suchoň). The art song—or the emotionally charged Russian romans—expresses the deepest human emotions (Sergei Rachmaninoff). At the pinnacle of vocal composition stands opera, with its highly evocative and dramatic scenes (Ruggiero Leoncavallo, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Richard Wagner, and Giuseppe Verdi).
