The piano works of Alexander Scriabin form one of the cornerstones of the repertoire in this field. His sonatas, however, are extremely demanding, which is why they appear on concert stages less frequently than the works of other piano virtuosos. Leoš Janáček found an inexhaustible source of inspiration in folk music and in the rhythms of human speech. He shocked his contemporaries with unconventional techniques, which, however, stem from the very essence of music itself. In the Sonata “From the Street”, he also, as an enthusiastic Russophile, paid tribute to the victims of a bloody uprising. Ján Zimmer, whose 100th birth anniversary we commemorate this year, distinguished himself not only as an outstanding composer but also as a piano virtuoso. He devoted numerous brilliant works to the piano, in which virtuosity is combined with evocative impressions. The spiritual father of modern virtuosity in piano playing was undoubtedly Franz Liszt. He fascinated audiences with the extreme demands he placed on both performer and instrument. At the same time, he was a broadly educated artist; the Dante Sonata, together with the Dante Symphony, expresses his admiration and enthusiasm for the Renaissance genius.
