Alexander Albrecht’s songs document not only his artistic development, from childhood compositions inspired by Classical and early Romantic song traditions to a highly personal lyrical style that may be described as an “Art Nouveau song” or a “modernist song.” The settings themselves reveal an equally broad stylistic range. Albrecht moved from the Classical and Romantic Lied towards a more expressive modern musical language, while the influence of German aphoristic poets led him to cultivate the song miniature, a form associated with the composers of the Second Viennese School. Wit and gentle humour are balanced in his songs by epic breadth and apocalyptic vision. The largest group of lyrical songs was undoubtedly inspired by love, whether love for a woman or for a child.
Albrecht’s song legacy comprises 30 settings of German poetry, six arrangements of songs from the German folk and popular tradition, three settings of Hungarian poems, and three arrangements of Slovak folk songs. This edition is based on source materials preserved in the Music Museum of the Slovak National Museum and in the Bratislava City Library and the University Library in Bratislava.
