This joint publication by the Music Centre Slovakia and the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava presents a revised edition of one of the landmark works of Slovak musicology by the Slovak composer, musicologist and music historian Ivan Hrušovský. Written in the late 1950s, the book offers an in-depth exploration of the development of harmony, tracing its evolution from the earliest forms of polyphony found in the music of indigenous cultures, through the polyphonic structures of European music over the past millennium, to the principles of compositional constructivism in the various musical movements of the twentieth century.
The publication is intended for students of all types of music schools as well as for anyone wishing to deepen their understanding of the historical development of European music. The volume is edited by Markéta Štefková, with Vladimír Godár serving as editor.
