String Quartet No. 1 D Major

String Quartet No. 1 in D major by Mikuláš Moyzes was composed between 1916 and 1926. Its four movements—Allegro moderato (1916), Adagio (1926), Gavotte (1920), and Finale (1926)—form a cohesive and substantial work. In the central section of the first movement, originally submitted as part of the composer’s state examination, Moyzes quotes the Slovak folk song Ľecela pava, ľecela, developing it through a series of variations. The melody appears in the first volume of Slovenské spevy, published by Matica slovenská (Hra na pávu, collected by K. Szereday, Šariš–Zemplín region, 1880, No. 596), and was also later used by Béla Bartók in For Children, Vol. III, No. 5 (1909).
