String Quartet No. 4 in G major by Mikuláš Moyzes, composed in 1943, is another four-movement cycle (Allegro giusto – Larghetto (con espressione) – Menuetto – Rondo. Allegro con anima) that incorporates a Slovak folk song from the first volume of Slovenské spevy. The quoted melody, Zasial som žitko, nebudem ho žať, appears in the closing section of the first movement (Slovenské spevy, Vol. I, No. 483; collected by August Horislav Krčméry, Zvolen region, 1879). The composer also points to the formal resemblance between the principal motif of the Menuetto and the Minuet from Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 in D major.
The edition includes the full score and individual instrumental parts.
Published to mark the 150th anniversary of Mikuláš Moyzes’s birth, together with the following titles: String Quartet No. 1 in D major, String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, and String Quartet No. 3 in F-sharp minor.
