Jean-Philippe Wurtz

Jean-Philippe Wurtz studied at the Conservatoire National de Région de Strasbourg, where he won first prizes in piano, chamber music, analysis, harmony and counterpoint. He worked there in particular with Jean-Louis Haguenauer, whose assistant he became in 1993. He continued his studies at the Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe and also received advice from Ernest Bour, whom he met in Strasbourg. At the same time, he was admitted as a student at the International Eötvös Institute, which allowed him to perfect his skills with Peter Eötvös. As part of this training, he was called upon to conduct the Asko, Modern and Contrechamps ensembles, notably during the sessions in Szombathely (Hungary) and the Centre Acanthes. After having been the assistant to Kent Nagano and Peter Eötvös, he founded the LINEA ensemble in 1998, dedicated to creation. His career as a conductor has led him to conduct, among others, the Ensemble Modern, the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, the Ensemble Plural, the Ensemble Smash, the Ensemble Accroche Note, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Bilbao Symphonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National des Pays de Loire, the Orchestre National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine, the Ensemble Alternance, the Ensemble ECCE, the Ensemble Talea, the Orchestre National de Montpellier, etc. A performer committed to creation, he has given more than three hundred premieres, including scores by Klaus Huber, Peter Eötvös, Brian Ferneyhough, Michael Jarrell, Wolfgang Rihm, Younghi Pagh-Paan, Unsuk Chin, Raphaël Cendo, Francesco Filidei, Philippe Manoury, David Felder, Alberto Posadas… Since 2015, he has been Artistic Director of the Musical Creation program at the Royaumont Foundation.
